“Everybody does not deserve unlimited access to you.”One of the hardest lessons in life is realizing that protecting your peace does not make you mean.
It does not make you selfish. It does not make you cold. And it definitely does not mean you stopped loving people.
Sometimes it simply means you got tired.
Tired of explaining yourself. Tired of answering every call. Tired of fixing problems you did not create. Tired of being everybody’s emergency contact while your own spirit is running on empty.
And baby, at some point, the customer service department has to close.
That does not mean you become cruel. It means you become more intentional about what you allow into your space.
A boundary can be as simple as saying, “I can’t do that today.”
It can look like answering the phone tomorrow instead of right now.
It can mean deciding that you are no longer going to argue with someone who is committed to misunderstanding you.
And sometimes, protecting your peace means loving somebody from a little farther away.
People may not always understand your boundaries, especially if they benefited from you not having any before.
When you start saying no, somebody may call you different.
When you stop explaining yourself, somebody may say you have changed.
And the truth is—you probably have.
You are learning.
You are growing.
You are beginning to understand that your peace is valuable, and everything valuable requires protection.
You do not have to feel guilty for needing quiet.
You do not have to apologize for needing space.
And you certainly do not have to keep giving people access to you simply because they have always had it.
You can be loving and still have limits.
You can be kind and still say no.
You can forgive and still decide not to return to the same situation.
That is not bitterness.
That is wisdom.
So if you are in a season where you are setting more boundaries, taking more time for yourself, and becoming more careful about where your energy goes, do not feel bad about it.
Sometimes peace comes when you finally stop trying to keep everybody else comfortable.
Protecting your peace does not mean you stopped loving people. Sometimes it means you finally learned how to love yourself while loving them.
If this met you right where you are today, share it with someone who is learning that boundaries are not disrespect.
